Copenhagen – from sleepy town to metropolis in 30 years

Copenhagen – from sleepy town to metropolis in 30 years

The story of Copenhagen's development from the 1990s to the present day is the story of a remarkable transformation from a 'dead end to the north' into the traffic hub of all Scandinavia.

This inspiring lecture describes this metamorphosis that began with a report from 1989 during prime minister Poul Schlüter's government, which paved the way for significant infrastructure projects like the Øresund Bridge, Ørestad, the Metro, and a series of new urban areas that have sprung up all over Copenhagen in the past three decades.

However, this architectural revolution goes beyond just the expansion in volume and scale. It represents a profound shift in how the relationship between people, the city, and nature is perceived and managed. The focus has been on creating spaces that foster a harmonious coexistence between urban life and the natural environment, promoting sustainability and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Copenhagen has become an architectural playground, where innovative and young Danish architects have had the freedom and support to experiment and implement their ideas. This has led to the development of a completely new vision for the city of the future, one that prioritizes human-centric design and environmental integration. The result is a dynamic and vibrant urban landscape that not only meets the needs of its inhabitants but also serves as a model for future urban development worldwide.

The lecture is in English. All are welcome.
