Moore's Law from 1965 predicts a doubling of computer processing power every 18 months. Back then, computers could do almost nothing compared to today, but the law has proven to be almost prophetic in its accuracy, as many decades later it is still roughly at this pace that chips and bits are evolving.
For comparison and perspective: If you double a single grain of rice 40 times – which is the number of periods in 18 months since 1965 – you have approximately 500 billion grains of rice. Not insignificant!
Nevertheless, it came as a bit of a shock to most when ChatGPT suddenly made AI accessible to the broader public last year. In record time, the technology has learned to take professional exams, conduct cancer screenings, and compete on equal footing with all sorts of writers. What just happened?
