In this course you will learn the basic knitting techniques and how to use them in a creative way.
Knitted fabric by teacher Julie Behaegel.
We will start by learning how to cast on a knitting project, how to knit, purl and cast off your sample after finishing. Once you are getting a hold of it, you will be invited to get creative and to experiment with different colors and material types.
During the course you will be introduced to different materials you can knit with and to different artists and designers that work with knitting in an interesting way.
Please bring 2 pair of knitting needles in 2 different sizes (for example no. 4 and no. 6) and gather different types of yarn (thickness, colour, material). This can be scrap yarn of friends and family or the secondhand shop.
The teacher will also bring different knitting needles, scrap yarn and books for you to use or borrow.

Education: After graduating as a master in Art History at the University of Ghent, I studied Textile Arts at SLAC (Leuven) and Textile Design at LUCA school of Arts (Ghent). I completed my studies with a specialized master in Knitting Design at Arba-Esa (Brussels).
Other professional qualifications: I’m a knitwear and textile designer with a background in art theory. Going back and forth between my hands and my mind, materials and thoughts, is key in how I work. The tactility of materials is an import factor in my artistic process that is always ongoing. I’m interested in the history of textiles, the social context around them and how this is evolving through time. Besides my own design practice, I've been working as a freelance knitwear designer for several fashion designers and companies in Denmark and Belgium.
Teaching experience: In Belgium I worked as a guest teacher in different primary schools and high schools.
