Make a chair

This workshop is designed to immerse participants in the realms of design and basic woodworking.

The exercise entails crafting a chair within defined design and material boundaries, including the use of a square section, specific tools (hand saw and table saw), and the restriction to straight cuts, along with assembly using screws and glue.

By adhering to a structured design process, the objective is for participants to not only engage in the practice but also to depart with a tangible project – a chair –representing their journey through the creative and constructive aspects of the workshop. The essence of creativity and the design process lies in these constraints, forming the focal point of exploration in this workshop.

Note

The workshop consists of three sessions. The first session will focus on sketching, designing the chair and planning the construction. Students will be introduced to basic technical drawing, emphasizing elevations and a cutting plan.

During the two making sessions, students will manufacture their chair using tools such as a handsaw, table saw, drill, and sander, along with screws, glue, and clamps to easily create the chairs. Finally, they will sand the final shapes and explore different options for finishes.

Education: I graduated with a Master’s Degree from a Business School in 2015 in Dijon, France, specializing in entrepreneurship.

Other professional experience: I am a self-taught designer and woodworker from France who established his design studio in 2020. Originally based in New Zealand, I have since opened my studio in Copenhagen. Before immersing myself in the world of design, my professional experiences encompassed diverse realms in the fields of sales and finance. However, at a decisive juncture, I made a resolute choice to redirect my career path and explore the art of furniture design. Initially drawn to the craftsmanship aspect of furniture, I dedicated several years to crafting wooden furniture. Gradually, I found myself captivated by the boundless creativity inherent in design.

Teaching experience: I have been conducting workshops for nearly three years, consistently infusing each session with the same enthusiasm and eagerness to bring joy to participants, ensuring they leave with a personally imagined and crafted item in hand.

Other: I aim to inspire others to explore their creative potential and demonstrate that the fusion of design and hands-on creation is an accessible and rewarding journey for all.
